Its time to make Mental Health a priority in our schools.

At The Big Trust, we see the reality of young people's lives every day. Many of the young people we work with are navigating more than exams and timetables - they're facing poverty, social exclusion, unstable housing and the effects of trauma.

And while schools are doing their best with limited resources and overworked staff, one thing is clear, Mental health support in schools shouldn't be "nice to have", it is a necessity.

Why is it so important?

According to NHS data, one in five children and young people in the UK now experience some sort of mental health disorder. That figure is more concerning in areas of high deprivation, like many of our communities in Liverpool. The cost of living crisis, the lasting impacts of COVID-19, and inequalities are all adding pressure on young minds.

But while mental health challenges are increasing, the much needed support available in schools has not. Whether this be long CAMHS waiting lists, overstretched pastoral teams and school staff, and inconsistent access to counselling means that many young people are falling through the cracks.

Education should be about more than exams

Schools are not just places for academic learning. For many people, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, school may be the only stable and supportive environment in their lives. That is exactly why it is vital that mental health is embedded into every day school life.

We believe that:

  • Mental health education should be a core part of the curriculum, not just an occasional PSHE topic.

  • Every school should have a dedicated mental health lead, trained to support students and guide staff.

  • Access to qualified counsellors and mental health professionals on site, or through strong local partnerships.

  • Increased training for teachers and support staff, so they feel confident spotting the signs and starting conversations.

  • Spaces where students feel safe to talk, express themselves and access help without fear or shame.

How The Big Trust help

We work with schools, employers, and local organisations to support young people across the Liverpool City Region. Our mentoring, employability programmes and community engagement all prioritise wellbeing, alongside aspiration. Because, we know a young person cannot plan for their future if they are in a mental health crisis.

We're proud to champion the voices of young people, and we're listening to what they're telling us. They need support that is timely, non - judgemental, and rooted in real understanding of their lives.

What can you do?

Mental health is not just a school issue, it is a shared responsibility, a community issue. And it is one we must face together - whether this be educators, charities, families, policymakers and businesses alike. Investing in young people's mental wellbeing today is an investment in the strength, resilience and potential of tomorrows community.

Today and always, we are supporting YoungMinds | Mental Health Charity For Children And Young People | YoungMinds. Lets ask our schools not only to teach, but to care, nurture and empower our young people.

At The Big Trust, we believe in a fairer future for everybody. If you want to support our work, or get involved in helping the young people in the Liverpool City Region thrive, get in touch today.
