The first day of a new school term is always a special moment. This week, as school gates opened across our city, thousands of children and young people took important steps forward. For some, it was their very first time putting on a uniform and walking into reception class. For others, it was the excitement of returning to familiar classrooms in primary school, ready for new challenges and friendships. And for many, it was the start of an entirely new chapter: the first day of high school - full of anticipation and nerves.
At The Big Trust, we see this day as more than just the beginning of another academic year. It's a milestone. It's the first page in a brand-new chapter of learning, growth, and opportunity. It's also a powerful reminder of why we do what we do: to support young people on their journey, raise their aspirations, and open doors to the future.
The importance of first days
First days matter, they shape how children feel about school, about themselves and what lies ahead.
For reception starters - today is about discovery: learning to make friends, building confidence away from home, and beginning to explore the world through play, stories and imagination.
For primary school pupils - it's about strengthening foundations - growing resilience, curiosity, and ambition as they take on new subjects and responsibilities.
For high school students - it's about stepping into independence. These years are critical for shaping identity, building aspirations, and starting to dream about the future.
For sixth form students - it's about refining ambitions and making important choices. Whether taking a-levels, vocational qualifications, or blending study with work experience, this stage is about focus, resilience, and preparing for the next leap - be that university, apprenticeships, or employment.
For college students - it's about looking ahead with independence. Whether pursuing practical skills, higher study, or new pathways into work, college is a stepping stone into adult life, where confidence and responsibility begin to grow.
These transitions can feel daunting, but they are also moments filled with possibility. With the right support, encouragement, and opportunities, young people can move from uncertainty to confidence - and from potential to achievement.
Our role at The Big Trust
At The Big Trust, our mission is simple but powerful: to help young people believe in themselves, broaden their horizons, and prepare for the world beyond school.
We work particularly with high school, sixth form, and college students, ensuring that as they step into these crucial stages they don't see barriers - they see possibilities.
This year, our work will continue to focus on:
Raising aspirations - showing young people that no dream is too big and no goal is out of reach.
Building connections - linking schools, sixth forms, and colleges with employers and local businesses so students can see what careers really look like.
Mentorship and guidance - matching young people with role models who can encourage, support, and inspire them.
Practical experiences - giving students opportunities to learn in real workplaces, helping them understand the skills and qualities employers value.
We know that aspiration begins with awareness. If young people don't see what's possible, they can't imagine themselves achieving it. That's why we're here: to open those doors and help them walk through the confidence.
Messages for the start of term
To our youngest learners, starting reception: this is the beginning of something truly special. Every new word, every picture painted, and every friendship made is a step towards your future.
To primary students: this year, you'll grow in ways you can't yet imagine. Keep asking questions, keep trying new things, and remember that mistakes are part of learning.
To high school students: today you stand on the edge of new opportunities. The next few years will shape who you are and who you want to become. Take chances, aim high, and don't be afraid to dream. And remember, you are not alone - The Big Trust is here to help you explore what's possible, prepare for the workplace, and build a future that excites you.
To sixth form students: these are years of focus and preparation. You'll be challenged to think about the future in new ways - whether that's applying for university, choosing apprenticeships, or entering the workplace. Use this time to discover your passions, sharpen you skills, and build the confidence you'll carry into adulthood.
To college students: your journey is entering a new stage. You'll be making choices that bring you closer to your goals - whether that's university, apprenticeships, or the world of work. Embrace this independence, explore your interests, and take every opportunity to build skills and connections. The Big Trust is here to stand alongside you, helping you bridge the gap between education and employment.
And to parents, carers, and families: thank you for all you do. You are your child's first teacher, their role model, and their biggest cheerleader. Every encouraging word, every packed lunch, and every patient conversation makes a difference.
Looking ahead to 2025 and beyond
The beginning of this school year is a fresh opportunity - a chance to reset, reimagine, and look forward with hope. The world is changing rapidly, and the jobs of tomorrow may look very different from those of today. But one thing remains constant: the potential of young people.
At The Big Trust, we believe in that potential. We believe every child, no matter their background, deserves the chance to discover their strengths, follow their passions, and build a fulfilling future. Our work in 2025 will continue to champion this vision - from the first day of school to the first day of sixth form or college, the first step into work, and every milestone in between.
So, as new shoes are laced, fresh notebooks are opened, timetables are explored, and classrooms come alive again with energy and laughter, let's celebrate the journey ahead. Because every first day is more than just a beginning - it's a doorway to possibility.
We can only do this important work through collaboration.
Schools, sixth forms, and colleges - partner with us to inspire your students and connect them with real-world opportunities.
Employers and businesses - open your doors to young people through workplace visits, mentoring, and work experience. A single encounter can change the course of a young person's future.
Community supporters and funders - join us in building brighter futures by helping us expand our programmes and reach more students across our region.
If you'd like to be part of this journey, we'd love to hear from you.
Here's to a year filled with learning, growth and ambition, and to the class of 2025!
