On this very day back in 1207, King John signed the royal charter that established as a free borough and privileged port. And just like that, our city was born!
818 years later, Liverpool has grown from a small port to one of the world's greatest cities - a world-famous city, known for its music, football, humour, and heart. But what really makes Liverpool special is its people - generations of scousers who've looked out for one another, lifted each other up, and never lost that famous spirit of kindness.
Liverpool's story is one of resilience. We've seen times of boom and times of challenge, but through it all, Scousers have stood together. Our docks once connected us to the globe, our music put us on the map, and our people - warm, witty, and full of spirit - have always been the heartbeat of the city.
We're a place that doesn't just look back on history with pride, but keeps creating it. From The Beatles to Arne Slot from stunning waterfront architecture to new creative districts buzzing with energy, Liverpool never stands still.
What makes Liverpool truly special: its people ❤️
More than the buildings, more than the trophies, more than the famous names - Liverpool's greatest asset is its people. A city full of heart, where communities rally together, neighbours look out for one another, and kindness is never in short supply.
That's why birthdays like today aren't just about candles and cake. They're about recognising the strength of our city - a strength rooted in compassion and community spirit.
The Big Trust, celebrating Liverpool the community way 🙌
Here at The Big Trust, we're proud to play a small part in the big hearted city. We exist to connect businesses, charities, and communities - helping to tackle inequalities, lift people up, and create opportunities where they're needed most.
Because while Liverpool has so much to celebrate, we know not everyone shares equally in that success. Many families and communities face real challenges. And it's in moments like this - reflecting on 818 years of Liverpool's story - that we're reminded of the power of working together to write a better chapter for everyone.
So today, as we wish Liverpool a very happy birthday, we're also celebrating:
The charities across the city who make an incredible difference every single day.
The volunteers who give their time and energy to lift others up.
The businesses who step up to support their communities and share success.
And the people - ordinary scousers doing extraordinary things - who embody what this city is all about.
A birthday wish for our city
Our wish for Liverpool's 818th birthday is simple: that we keep building a city where no one is left behind. Where compassion is as strong as creativity, and where opportunity is something everyone can share in.
Whether you're raising a glass on the Pier Head, belting out a tune on Matthew street, cheering at Anfield or the new Bramley Moore Dock, or just feeling proud from afar - join us in celebrating not only Liverpool's past, but it's future.
