Opportunity is the most powerful intervention.

On social mobility day 2025, The Big Trust are proud to stand alongside communities, employers, and individuals across the UK to champion the idea that where you start in life shouldn't determine where you end up.

At The Big Trust, we're working every day to break down the barriers that prevent people from reaching their potential - especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds or those who've been written off by society.

What is social mobility?

Social mobility refers to a person's ability to improve their social or economic position in life - for example, moving from a low - income background into a higher-paying job, or being the first in a family to attend university or own a home.

In a fair society, opportunities shouldn't be dictated by postcode, family income, or access to a network. True social mobility means giving everyone a fair shot, regardless of their background.

Unfortunately, the UK still faces some of the widest opportunity gaps in Europe. Young people growing up in low - income households, care leavers, and those facing school exclusion are still less likely to access higher education or meaningful employment.

Supporting young people

At The Big Trust, we work with young people who are at risk of antisocial behaviour, exclusion from school, or involvement in the criminal justice system. These young people are often navigating trauma, poverty, and a lack of trust in the system - but they are also full of potential.

We believe the most effective way to turn a life around is through early intervention and real opportunity. That's why we partner with businesses to offer work experience, mentoring, raise aspirations, skills development and routes into sustainable employment.

Every placement is a chance to change a mindset. Every mentor is a voice of encouragement and every door opened is one less young person at risk of being left behind.

Why does it matter?

Social mobility is about hope, backed by opportunity. It's not enough to say "work hard and you'll succeed" when starting lines are miles apart. That's why were calling on everyone - employers, educators, community leaders - to help level the playing field.

When we invest in social mobility, we reduce reoffending, boost economic productivity and build stronger, safer communities. We unlock talent that might otherwise be wasted. And give young people something many of them haven't had before: a sense of purpose and a reason to hope.

This isn't just the right thing to do - its the smart thing to do.

How you can get involved

  • Employers: Partner with us to offer life-changing opportunities to young people who need a new path.

  • Educators and Community leaders: Help us identify those most in need and co-create solutions that work.

  • Supporters: Donate or fund initiatives that empower the next generation with skills, confidence and purpose. Your funding helps us scale our programmes, reach more young people, and offer life-changing interventions.

Final word: From risk to resilience

On social mobility day 2025, let's not just talk about barriers - lets break them. Let's not just highlight programmes - let's offer pathways.

Lets stand behind the belief that every young person deserves a future, and that the most powerful intervention we can offer is opportunity. Lets build a society where success is based on talent, not privilege, and where a young person's future is determined by their potential - not their past.

At The Big Trust, we believe opportunity is the most powerful intervention we can offer. Join us in creating a world where that opportunity belongs to everyone.
