One year ago today, in Southport - and the hearts of people far beyond - were shattered by the tragic killings of Alice, Elsie and Bebe. Three young girls, full of life and potential, were taken from this world in a moment of unthinkable violence. We remember them not just as victims, but as daughters, sisters, friends - as bright lights who's absence has left a darkness that still lingers.
At The Big Trust, we believe remembrance must come with reflection. As we honour their memory, we ask: how do we make our communities safer for children? How do we confront the systems and silences that allow violence to take place?
Honouring their lives
Alice, Elsie and Bebe were loved deeply. Their laughter, their energy, their dreams - these should still be with us today. As a community, we honour them by saying their names, sharing their stories, and refusing to let them be forgotten.
This past year has been marked by grief, but also by incredible acts of solidarity. Candelight vigils, school memorials, community gardens, and youth-led events have sprung up across Southport and beyond. These are signs not just of mourning, but of resilience.
The need for change
Whilst we cannot undo what happened, we can - and must - change the conditions that make such tragedies possible. That means better support for families. It means strengthening early intervention and mental health services. It means listening when children speak, and responding when they cry out for help - even in silence.
We must look at what safety really means - not just policing, but protecting. Not just reacting, but preventing. It's about neighbours knowing one another. Schools, social services and local groups working together. It's about creating a culture where every child is seen, heard and safe.
Their legacy
One year on, the pain remains. But so does the hope - the belief that we can build a world where children are safe, valued, and free to grow into all they were meant to be.
Alice, Elsie, Bebe - your names live on in our work, our hearts, and our commitment to a better, kinder world.
We remember, we grieve, we act.
